A Russian applicant’s guide to medical school in Lithuania: english studies, lithuanian career path
Why choose Lithuania?
- Open admissions (No NC Quotas): Unlike many EU countries like Germany, admission to Lithuanian medical faculties isn’t restricted by the Numerus Clausus (NC) quota system. Selection is based on entrance exam performance, not just high school grades, giving a fair chance to applicants who excel in core science subjects.
- Vibrant international student community: Lithuanian medical universities actively recruit students from all over the globe. At the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), international students make up 23-28% of the student body, while at Vilnius University (VU), they account for 21%. This fosters a multicultural environment with robust support services for international students.
- Globally recognized diploma: A medical degree from Lithuania is automatically recognized across the entire European Union. Furthermore, as of 2024, diplomas from Vilnius University are fully recognized in the USA, Israel, and other countries, thanks to its accreditation by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
Key challenges to consider
- The academic hurdle: Admission is direct but highly competitive. The main obstacle is the English-language entrance exam in biology and chemistry, combined with a motivational interview. While there are no quotas, the number of available spots is limited, leading to stiff competition.
- The financial hurdle: Tuition fees are comparable to other European countries, ranging from €12,500 to €13,100 per year. To obtain a student residence permit, you must prove you have sufficient funds for living expenses. For 2025, this requires showing 0.5 of the minimum monthly salary (€1,038) for each month of your stay, plus one full minimum salary for your return trip. In total, for the first year, you need to demonstrate access to approximately €7,266 (€1,038 * 0.5 * 12 + €1,038).
- The dual language barrier: The program is taught entirely in English (requiring a B2 level, such as IELTS 5.5+ or TOEFL 65+). However, to pursue a medical career in Lithuania—specifically, to enter a residency program for specialization—you must achieve B1 proficiency in the Lithuanian language. This is a «hidden» requirement that you’ll need to work on alongside your primary studies.
- Simplified bureaucracy: Unlike fully licensed doctors, prospective students do not need to manage the recognition of their high school diploma through the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (SKVC) themselves. The university’s admissions committee handles this process on the applicant’s behalf, which significantly streamlines the procedure.
High school diploma equivalency
A Russian high school diploma (аттестат) is recognized for admission to Lithuanian universities, but the process is not direct. The university itself, in cooperation with the national ENIC/NARIC center (SKVC), conducts the academic recognition and equivalency assessment. This means you do not need to submit a separate application to SKVC. You simply need to upload an apostilled copy of your diploma, its academic transcript, and their certified translations to the university’s application portal.
Application routes
- Route A (Direct Admission — Primary Path): This is the standard route for graduates of Russian high schools. It involves registering on the university portal, submitting your documents, and passing the entrance exam (a biology and chemistry test plus an interview). A Foundation Year is not required.
- Route B (Exam-Free Admission): This route is available to applicants holding international qualifications like the International Baccalaureate (IB) or A-Levels with high scores in relevant subjects. It’s also open to those who have achieved a score above a certain threshold on standardized tests like the MCAT, BMAT, or IMAT.
- Route C (University Transfer): Vilnius University allows students to transfer from other universities, but only into the second or third semester. This requires submitting a detailed academic transcript and course syllabi to compare completed coursework.
The application process
The application process is fully centralized and handled online through the universities’ official portals: apply.vu.lt for Vilnius University and apply.lsmuni.lt for the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Unlike in Germany, where applicants often have to go through a preliminary document verification service like uni-assist, in Lithuania, you interact directly with the university.
Choosing a university
Lithuania has two main hubs for medical education offering programs in English.

Financial reality and student life
Cost of living
Lithuania offers a more affordable cost of living compared to Western European countries. The main expenses are housing and food.
| Expense Category | Approx. Cost in Vilnius (€/month) | Approx. Cost in Kaunas (€/month) | Notes |
| Accommodation (Dorm) | 100 – 250 | 100 – 250 | The most budget-friendly option, but spots are limited. |

| Total (Minimum) | ~€400 | ~€400 | A realistic minimum budget if living in a dormitory. |
Student work rights
International students with a residence permit are entitled to work in Lithuania. However, it is crucial to check the latest regulations on working hours per week with the Migration Department, as these rules can change.
Total estimated annual cost
A rough estimate of your minimum annual expenses would be: (€12,500 tuition + €29 semester fee + €4,800 living costs) = ~€17,329 per year.
Career after graduation
- Post-graduation work rights: Upon graduating, you can obtain a residence permit for up to 12 months to search for a job or an internship.
- Career path: The first step after receiving your diploma is to enter a residency program (rezidentūra) to specialize. This is only possible if you are proficient in the Lithuanian language (B1 level). While a resident doctor’s starting salary is lower than a specialist’s, it is enough to cover basic living expenses.
- Path to permanent residency: The years spent in Lithuania on a student residence permit count towards the five-year period required for permanent residency, but at a 2:1 ratio. This means six years of study count as three years towards this requirement. After graduating and working for another two years, you can apply for permanent residency.
